Michael C., born Michael Sidney Caston on the south side of Chicago, was blessed with music in his soul. Like many toddlers, he created a makeshift drum set from his mother’s pots and pans when he was 5 years old. He never outgrew his love for playing percussion. As a teenager his first paying jobs were performing with local cover bands, but then the gospel world snatched him up. By the time he was 15, he was getting paid to drum for the New Friendship Baptist Church. He played drums with legendary gospel groups including: The Clark Sisters, Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Rev. James Cleveland, to name a few. After graduating from high school Michael C. joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in CO Springs at Fort Carson. While serving in the military, Michael C. was privileged to be asked to perform in a U.S.O. show for service men and women. During his leisure time he continued to play with local cover bands. He began to focus more and more on his vocals, and he became more serious about pursuing his dream of becoming a professional vocalist and entertainer. It didn’t take long for the word to spread about this dynamic and energetic performer. Critics and fans alike couldn’t deny the versatile, passionate, seductive, and sensual sound of Michael C.’s vocals. Oftentimes he was, and continues to be, compared to Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross – artists who inspired and influenced him.
Having a love for sports during his leisure; football and basketball especially, Michael C. had the opportunity to play semi-pro and professional football. He decided to take a break from his music career to see where the athlete in him would lead. However, injuries got the best of him and he knew it wasn’t meant to be. All the while, Michael C. never lost his desire and dream to continue his pursuit of furthering his music career. He continued to drum and sing with cover bands. But as the gigs increased, so did the requests for his vocals. It didn’t take long for Michael C. to make the move from CO Springs to Denver where he contracted as the front man/lead vocalist for the highly demanded and well-known groups: Moments Notice Entertainment & The Jerry Barnett Orchestra and Starkey Productions band, SoulX. During this same time, Michael C. also formed several groups of his own including Xtended Version, Stretch9, Michael C. & the All Stars, and now The Michael C. Experience. These groups, with Michael C. as a lead vocalist, has allowed him the opportunity to share his first love on stages all across the U.S., from New York to Los Angeles, as well as internationally in Canada and the Dominican Republic. Performances have included: two U.S. Presidential Inaugural Balls at our nation’s capitol, two Kentucky Derbies, and opening for Robin Thicke, Regina Belle, Howard Hewitt, En Vogue, and Donell Jones, just to name a few.
